چکیده

In recent decades, there has been increasing interest in the use of herbs to maintain human health, many growing in the Southern and Eastern Asian countries. One example, pericarps of Garcinia mangostana (GM), called mangosteen, have been in use for hundreds of years as a traditional herbal medicine for a variety of purposes, including treatment of skin infections and wounds (Mahabusarakam, 1987), or malaria infections (Likhitwitayawuid et al., 1998). Investigators have recently focused on the medical properties Inhibitory Effects of Crude α-Mangostin, a Xanthone Derivative, on Two Different Categories of Colon Preneoplastic Lesions Induced by 1, 2-dimethylhydrazine in the Rat

Inhibitory effects of crude alpha-mangostin, a xanthone derivative, on two different categories of colon preneoplastic lesions induced by 1, 2-dimethylhydrazine in the rat.

The purpose of this study was to examine whether crude alpha-mangostin (a major xanthone derivative in mangosteen pericarp (Garcinia mangostana)) has short-term chemopreventive effects on putative preneoplastic lesions involved in rat colon carcinogenesis. The crude preparation was obtained by simple recrystallization of an ethylacetate extract of mangosteen pericarps. A total of 33 five-week-o...

Effects of alpha-mangostin on memory senescence induced by high glucose in human umbilical vein endothelial cells

Objective(s): Hyperglycemia induces cellular senescence in various body cells, such as vascular endothelial cells. Since the vessels are highly distributed in the body and nourish all tissues, vascular damages cause diabetes complications such as kidney failure and visual impairment. Alpha-mangostin is a xanthone found in mangosteen fruit with protective effects in met...

The Mangosteen Fruit and Xanthones

We investigated the effect of gamma-mangostin purified from the fruit hull of the medicinal plant Garcinia mangostana on spontaneous prostaglandin E(2) (PGE(2)) genase release and inducible cyclooxy-2 (COX-2) gene expression in C6 rat glioma cells. An 18-h treatment with gammamangostin potently inhibited spontaneous PGE(2) release in a concentration-dependent manner with the IC(50) value of app...

Intestinal MUC2 and gastric M1/MUC5AC in preneoplastic lesions induced by 1,2-dimethylhydrazine in rat: a sequential analysis.

Our study was performed to sequentially analyze the expression of the intestinal mucin MUC2 and of the gastric mucin MUC5AC as indicators during progression of preneoplastic biomarkers in rat colon. F344 rats were sacrificed 2, 4, 8, 12, 24 and 36 weeks after injection of 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH, 200 mg/kg, i.p.). The expression of MUC2 and of MUC5AC was studied by immunohistochemistry in pr...

α-Mangostin from Cratoxylum arborescens (Vahl) Blume Demonstrates Anti-Ulcerogenic Property: A Mechanistic Study

Cratoxylum arborescens (Vahl) Blume is an Asian herbal medicine with versatile ethnobiological properties including treatment of gastric ulcer. This study evaluated the antiulcerogenic mechanism(s) of α -mangostin (AM) in a rat model of ulcer. AM is a prenylated xanthone derived through biologically guided fractionation of C. arborescens. Rats were orally pretreated with AM and subsequently exp...
